Easter Sunday, April 8th 2012, Colombo, Sri Lanka – A sweltering day

A day when two showers is definitely not enough but 4 would be too extravagant in keeping with the need of the day to conserve the Earth’s water resources.

A thunder shower or two, not even relieving the misery, but adding to the humidity, where windows were closed and had to be open again for airflow to reduce the stifling feeling.

A day full of hot blooded souls saying hot blooded things, but a day nevertheless where work and the end product with a timetable was the order of the hour.

It was Easter, where church had to be foregone, a sudden breakfast invitation at the Rajagiriya McDonalds relieved the pangs, but nevertheless showed the nature of patience to be a virtue.

A customer screaming for better service, getting his order in parts, and letting the manager know what he thought of them, and on the look of the servers faces told a story of lack of standards.

We had to scream for service, with a girl who knew not what she was doing! So much so that the hash browns, all 4 were completely over-fried and had to be returned for replacements.

A day when the coffee was sickly sweet, what planet are they from, when on a hot day a sugarless coffee is the only savior when too much sugar makes us hyper active and today hyper agitated.

A day in the office to meet the deadline, a staff one comes in at 10.30 the other at 12.30 and yet another at 1pm when I was in after breakfast at McDonalds at 9am.

A day we go for lunch when all were eating, with time only to eat and leave the table with not a moment to relax and unwind. A truly blessed day of communion, fretful nevertheless to achieve.

Dropped off by a kind soul all three of us, with a lunch packet for a fourth and back to work in a steam room, no matter what speed the fan did not keep exhaustion at bay.

It is all about Provinces, Districts, Electorates, and Active Members; of those that have been enrolled and it is all about numbers. It is a spreadsheet to show the trail.

A deadline met, an office shut a drop off of the document at the door of the Leader, and finally back home to more tiredness. All windows open, a breeze forced in and listless moment before the next phase of HBP (high blood pressure)

A farm of fools, all phones not answering or not working, tempers flare, and the heat is too much. Frantic attempts to contact end in failure. Threats to sack the lot for this transgression go unheeded.

Finally lying in the dark, contact made, more tempers flare, more choice words said, more accusations made, and innuendo becomes gospel. No chance of seeing a different perspective.

Poddi says one thing Menike another, the poles apart have no common thread and who to believe. Why does it matter who said what? But that is Lanka where mountains are made of molehills.

The daughter the bait, the cursed, and the betrayed. She lies hurt refuses to go to school. He is adamant he wants blood of who made this dastardly accusation. The saga goes on with no resolution.

I lie there wondering why I bother. Being self centered sounds so much better, that worrying about each one’s well being, when no one cares of one’s own, least of all myself.

So who said Poddi slept the night with Panditha Arachchi? Menika says it is him, and he says he never did and does not even know the person who made the accusation. When the mother says she knows the boy who said!

What do I do? Who do I believe? I have to trust my Poddi, though I know he loves a plot to thicken when none exists. I am caught between a rock and a hard place!

Menika threatens to leave, Poddi refuses to go to the farm for shame. I tell him what shame if you have done nothing wrong? After all accusations especially of the unfounded kind in how the country thrives and survives.

So what pray is the truth? But then again who cares? Does it really matter? Why worry? I say when we are fighting far more serious issues of the day. We are facing death threats for our cause.

For them this is a matter of honor. It is a matter of shame, the girl a victim of vicious finger pointing when none should be directed. We live we die. THE END

The incredible case of the missing dog that finally found its owner

Saturday the 11th of December Ranga Boy went to sleep in the room by the Shop after chatting with the farm boys around 11pm and earlier he had shut the door of the bungalow, where Master Sir was sleeping as he was very ill with a viral flu and (Aiya)Sagara Boy was staying in the house to take care of his needs, like making the periodic green tea to help him handle the cough and generally make him feel good. He was on 6hrly panadols to try to keep the fever down.

The next morning there was no sign of Hugo. The immediate neighborhood was searched and people in the locality were asked and a reward was offered and everyone who came to the shop was questioned. For the head of the pack (Bahu) it was just another irritant in the midst of so many irritants, as I am losing attention each time a new one makes it to the scene. Remember Hugo was given a lot of privileges not given to the rest, as he was on a different diet to the rest of us, and he was allowed to wander around the farm from room to room and roam.

Anyway weeks went by and there was absolutely no sign, when one morning namely 2nd of Jan, someone had told Aiya that they had spotted Hugo at a nearby house and told him where it was. Upon going to the place and enquiring he had indeed confirmed that the dog was indeed Hugo, and Lokka who was on his way in to the farm from Colombo was informed and went immediately to see for himself.

He was confronted with a whole family, uncles aunts etc all amounting to more than 15 persons when he went to see the dog and Hugo walked up to him to be petted for all to see and be claimed. The boy had apparently sold his chickens to put Hugo in the cemented cage and said that no one had come to claim him and that is why they kept him. Aiya on the other hand said that he being a local school boy about 15 who goes to the Subharathi school, had been told about the dog being lost and if he had taken it would have known better than to make a statement that no one had come to claim him. So who is telling the real story is of importance.

To add spice to the intrigue the mother of the boy comes to the kade, She is a regular of the shop anyway, came it and told Menika the shop girl that Aiya and her son had some dealings and if anyone who should be questioned, it should have been Aiya himself. Of course any mother would want the suspicions that currently lie with the son to be directed elsewhere and it would be natural to make such an allegation, but it all adds to the make believe world we live in where lies are the order of the day and finding the truth is like the proverbial search of the needle in the haystack. So Hugo instead of going on Monday December 13th to have his rabies shots, instead met the date on Monday January 3rd, 2011 and has joined us.

he is the man who looks after all of us - Aiya

So to prevent us giving the baby a hard time he has decided to have him in his room on his bed and give him special treatment! Not this little one stupid, that is him carrying the visitor "Donut" who came over to play!

visitors for a spend the day with us and on Hugo Rama's arrival

Farzana's twins look adorable with the dogs they want to squeeze!! They had a really exciting time as they brought their toy dog to meet the new arrival, and left their golden lab skipper at home as he was too boisterous.

A day on the farm with twins and cousins and visiting dogs all wanting to play with us. So we made hay while the sun did not shine today. In fact it was pissing down with rain all day so we all stayed indoors and played the merry devil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dogs too many dogs for Hugo Rama

How does he compare with the rest of us?

Rama wants to hog the sofas and beds so we will let him do as he pleases, I think he is now allowed the run of the house while we have to make do with the kennels! lucky for some!!
Mala is not in the picture as when the noise gets too much with the kids and all running around she goes back to her kennel looking for grub so is not in the frame today. But Megha (the white one) and Soma (the spotted one) are all for posing!
